It will take about 25 seconds for mini papads and wheat fryums pictured below.
Usually it will take a minute per batch for original size papads (Bigger ones) and colored fryums.
If you are trying minapappu vadiyalu (urad dal fritters, the darker shade ones in the picture), it would take around 40 seconds.
Since microwave strengths vary, the roasting time may decrease or increase. If you are following this method for the first time, be sure to keep a watchful eye on the papads during the whole process. A few seconds more will almost over brown them and they will have a burnt taste.
And I would NOT recommend this method for saggubiyyam vadiyalu (sabudana papad / fritters) and atukula vadiyalu (poha papad / fritters). (Pics below)
(I have used the word 'Papad' both for appadalu (Happala) and vadiyalu (sandige). I have no idea what Andhra vadiyalu are called in Hindi. I have noticed in shops that sabudaana and the rice flour variety vadiyalu are sold under the name papad. Hence I have used 'Papad' liberally.)
This goes to Microwave Easy Cooking- Basics event hosted by Srivalli of 'Cooking 4 all seasons'.
Update: As you see, sabudana papads can be toasted in Microwave. They are done in about 30 seconds. Our home made sabudana papads contain green chillies and when they are toasted in MW, we can feel (the rawness of) green chillies burning our food passage. This is avoided by regularly frying them in oil. With poha fritters, (as you can see in the picture) even before the out side is done, the inner portion starts to burn and smoke. Poha fritters and MW don't get along.

I too make my papads in the MW.I never knew that it could be used for such things till my hubby taught me a couple of basic things when I first got here after marriage:-)It's been so long since I said Fryums. It reminds me of that silly jingle for the ad.. fryums ta-da, fryums ta-da.
ReplyDeletesuma..thanks! i crave vadams ..but refrain from deep-frying! sometimes ;)..this is just great...
ReplyDeleteThis is useful info. Whenever I tried using the micro for papads, it either gets burnt or raw :( SHould try again..

ReplyDeleteSuma, very brilliant one...thanks for the nice entry...
ReplyDeleteSuma, looks so colorful and yummy. Whenever I have tried doing this, it does not come out properly. Now that I have proof, I will try again.
ReplyDeleteHey this is awesome Suma, I roast papads in the microwave but had no idea I could do fryums too!! I'm gonna try it right away coz I've been putting away frying a whole pack of the coloured ones..hehe...:)
ReplyDeleteSuma I roast papad but never fryums, should try them. I never make them because of oil.Looks so colorful
ReplyDeleteSuma, why don't you recommend the MW for sabudana papad? Today, after reading your post (not very carefully, as you can see) I experimented with one sabudana papad, one minappindi appdam and one popped rice appadam - the sabu. papad did well in 25 secs, just a few spots along the edges didn't cook, the popped rice did v well in 40 secs, turned once, and the minappindi appadam cooked in parts and didn't expand, even though I broke it into pieces.
ReplyDeleteBtw, I tried your mosaravalakki with red rice flakes and it was very tasty, thanks for the recipe.
Excellent post, Suma! I do use the MW frequently for Lijjat papad (urad dal based papads) but did not know that it could be used for fryums-type stuff too! Your pictures are gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteSuper entry Suma! How nice that we can do away with oil!
ReplyDeleteVery nice, interesting, colorful and informative post for us Indians specially who cannot live without out pappadams and fritters.....that looks awesome!

good entry for the event!
I've not tried making the fryums in the MW - did today and it was good (sprayed a bit of PAM). Mostly I only nuke the Lijjat (Pepper) papads but these are great too.. thanks so much Suma.
ReplyDeleteOh suma, You won't believe this. I wanted to post about frying papads in MW. Then I ended up posting for RCI:K. But I learnt that we can fry fryums too from you. Thanks for the nice pictures and info.
ReplyDeleteI usually fry the pepper pappads in microwave and they turn out very well ... haven't tried with ordinary papads and fryums ... nice pics.
ReplyDeleteI loved the coloured flowers. very pretty looking. I had brought a lot of them from India. now I am out of stock.
ReplyDeleteTBC,
ReplyDeleteMW is such a great life saver. Isn't it? I have been away from India for the past decade and I am not aware of that ad. Indian ads are worth watching. They are like a slice from bollywood.:)
Rajitha,
I hope you enjoy them now.
Pragyan,
Just keep a watchful eye through out the process. Also try doing one at a time, till you get it.
Roopa,
Thanks. It sure is healthy.
Ramya, I don't see any difference when using MW. The papads are thin as the ones fried in oil. May be because of the quality of the papads, though I am not sure.
Srivalli,
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Red chillies,
Hopefully you get it right this time.
Namratha,
Did you enjoy them?
Sreelu,
You can enjoy all these with MW.
Sra,
Thanks. See the update for your question. Glad you liked mosaravalakki.

ReplyDeleteThats a detailed explanation. thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteSince we are getting a MWO home now.. I was trying to explore the techniques of cooking in it.. when I came across your blog :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this nice post :)
I tried and enjoyed. It tasted good glad it wasn't fried.
ReplyDeleteI have linked your page to an event
http://torviewtoronto.blogspot.com/2010/06/papadums-in-microwave.html
In winter roasting takes long time 1.5 to 2 minutes and always watch as pap-pads will catch fire.
ReplyDeleteNot a good experience.
Mr.Subrahmanyam,
ReplyDeletePapads always take me about a minute to get roasted irrespective of the weather. (It doesn't matter because of the heating system, I guess.)I have never gone beyond that time to burn my papads.
It is always wise to keep an eye on the MW, particularly if we are not sure about the amount of time needed to cook to avoid any mishaps.
Even I have a Microwave, mostly I use it for warming food only....but now I have an interest to find some easy recipies & came across this post via Microwave food event...I will try this...
ReplyDeleteHi Suma,
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for the microwave papad idea.. I was searching for an easier method to make papad without heating oil.. You saved me from so much work.. :)
I did spend many years, kindda eating Papadums fried and sometimes in the microwave. But the frying did get a little tedious, and fatty with the oils, especially when you got two kids who have learnt from their dad to eat Papadums all year round hahahaa. I mean we make curries and Indian sort of rice dishes all the time and my kids love having their Papadums with it. Yes, I raise my hand and blame myself, for them becoming foodies. But, a month ago, I found the nifty Aussie made device called the Papadum Express microwave cooking tray. Bought one, and haven’t looked back since. Real easy now. Anytime the kids want one, I have Papadums ready in a minute. I make six at a time now, unbelievable and without any oil at all. You can make 10 but, I’d need a more power intensive microwave for that. Overall, I am enjoying Papadums in the microwave with Papadum Express on the go, as they are really the main snack items in our house. Also, avoiding all the fatty intake is an issue I am now happy to avoid. Great guns Papadums. Hope this help.
ReplyDeleteVery good.....! It turned out to be so nyc....just couldn't believe!! Thank u so much....
ReplyDeleteI have put them (colorful ones) in a brown paper bag, sprayed with a bit of oil, and microwaved with great results. Like popcorn!
