Announcing Cook.Eat.Delicious - Desserts #6 and a Giveaway

We wish all the visitors, friends and our family a joyous and prosperous new year. May all your dreams and wishes come true during 2012. And my blogging starts in this new year with a sweet announcement, literally. :)

Vegetables are a must on a diet. I suggest carrot cake, zucchini bread, and pumpkin pie.  ~ Jim Davis

If you believe the same, then you are at the right place and this event is definitely for people like you. :) I was just kidding and everyone is welcome to cook and eat delicious desserts. Just remember to send them over some to me virtually since I am guest hosting CEDD #6 this month. Yes, Raven's yummilicious Cook.Eat.Delicious - Desserts event comes to VeggiePlatter this month and I am going with "fresh produce" as my theme. Thanks Raven for the hosting opportunity and the beautiful logo.
Another exciting feature of this event is the following book, offered by Raven as prize to a winner chosen by a random drawing.

500 Seasonal Recipes: Making the Most of Fresh Produce through Spring, Summer, Autumn & Winter by Anne Hildyard. This cookbook has all the recipes you need to utilize fresh produce throughout the year to cook up some delicious food!

Here are the guidelines for participation:
1. Cook / Bake any dessert with "Fresh Produce" as the star ingredient. Use any vegetable and/or fruit of your choice but keep it vegetarian and nonalcoholic. Eggs are allowed only in baking.
2. The event runs thru the month of January and the last day to send entries would be 31st January, 2012.  Please provide a link to this event announcement page and to CookEatDelicious.com in your post.
3. Use of logo is optional but appreciated. It would help to spread the word about the event.

4. New entries are preferred, with archived ones being re-posted.
5. Multiple entries are accepted with only one going towards the giveaway.
6. Non-bloggers are welcome to send in their entry. Just attach a photo & full recipe.
7. Email me about your entry at
toveggieplatter@hotmail.com with the following details.
Your name
Your location
Recipe name
Recipe URL
Photo URL
8. Post a comment in this post after emailing me so that your entry is not missed in my spam folder!

That means all you have to do to participate in this event and become eligible to win the above book is prepare desserts with fruits and/or vegetables of your choice and send it to me. The roundup of the event and details of the winner would be published by the first week of February.
I would be waiting for all those mouthwatering desserts from your kitchens. :)

Announcing "My Legume Love Affair" - 40

I know I have been missing from action for quite sometime now. An intentional weeklong break turned into a longer one, amidst the daily chaos of a normal life. :) Time flies by, isn't it? However cliched the statement may seem, it is the eternal truth. Susan assured me the same last March when I had requested for an earlier MLLA hosting opportunity. The earliest she could come up with was this month owing to the immense popularity of MLLA. :)
Thanks to Susan, her wonderful event "My Legume Love Affair" aka "MLLA" is stopping by veggieplatter, this month and I am requesting my fellow foodies to join me in celebrating this "legume love affair". As the name indicates, MLLA is all about legumes.

What is a legume?
" A legume is a plant in the family Fabaceae or Leguminosae, or a fruit of these specific plants. A legume fruit is a simple dry fruit that develops from a simple carpel and usually dehisces (opens along a seam) on two sides. A common name for this type of fruit is a pod, although the term "pod" is also applied to a few other fruit types, such as vanilla and radish. Well-known legumes include alfaalfa, clover, peas, beans, lentils, lupins, mesquite, carob, soy and peanuts." (Source - Wiki)

The eligible legumes for this event:
Fresh or dried beans, lentils, pulses, and/or the sometimes edible pods that contain these seeds, and derivative products like tofu or besan/chickpea flour all come under "legumes". Even tamarind, fenugreek, carob, peanuts, etc. are among some of the other edible plants in the legume family which are included in this event. MLLA is really about legumes of any sort as the main draw. In short, I accept an entry as long as the recipe showcases the legume primarily but not as an auxiliary ingredient.

Simple guidelines for participation in the event:
* Only vegetarian / vegan recipes with legume(s) as the star ingredient are eligible. A spoonful or soupcon of a legume is not quite enough to qualify. All courses and cuisines are welcome.
* Deadline for the event is 31st October, 2011. Please provide a link to this event announcement page and Susan's
host lineup page.
* Please send me an email notifying about your entry to
toveggieplatter@hotmail.com with these details - your name, your location, recipe name, recipe URL and a 400 pixel sized image of the final dish.
 * Multiple recipes are permitted but only one submission will be counted towards the random drawing/s.
* Recipes from archives are accepted only if updated and reposted as current. This is strictly mandatory.

* Recipes submitted to other events are also permitted.
* Recipes from nonbloggers are also welcome and make eligible the participants to win a prize.
* Use of logo is optional.

Prizes:
One of the exciting features of this event are the prizes by Susan, offered to winners chosen by random drawings. Please note that neither Susan's family/ friends nor mine are eligible to win these prizes.

1) The New Food Lover's Companion by Sharon Tyler Herbst and Ron Herbst. This prize is offered by Susan without influence at her expense, and she will also absorb worldwide shipping charges. F.T.C. Notice: Susan does not receive any compensation from Amazon.
2) Hurst Bean Box - A case of six bags of the winner's choice of
Hurst Bean products, suitable for every diet, sponsored by Hurst Bean. (Due to shipping restrictions, this prize can only be awarded if the winner is a U.S. resident.) F.T.C. Notice: In May 2010, Susan, at her request, received two Hurst Bean complimentary products which are not available for purchase in her local markets. Susan does not generally accept free products from Hurst Bean nor is she financially compensated by them.
Drawing Structure - If the winner is a U.S. resident, she/he will be the recipient of both Prizes 1 and 2 above. In the event that an international winner is drawn, a second drawing will be conducted from the U.S. pool of entrants to ensure that the Hurst Prize is awarded every month. In these instances, the international winner will receive the book, and the U.S. winner will receive the Hurst Prize.

I am looking forward to your wonderful entries. :)

Announcing "Cooking With Whole Foods - LB - Toor Dal / Pigeon Peas"

I am glad to announce that Kiran's "Cooking with Whole Foods" event stops by this month at VeggiePlatter for it's next edition. As the name suggests, this event is all about healthy whole foods and each edition focuses on a particular ingredient from the group. I chose to go with bean / legume category and picked "Toor dal".

I, like millions of other Indian vegetarians depend on toor dal / pigeon peas for sustenance and so thought of showing my respect to this nourishing dal during this event. This happens to be a bimonthly event and so everyone gets plenty of time to choose and cook those special 'toordal' dishes. I am hoping the fellow foodies are going to make this event successful. :) Thanks in advance.

Please follow these guidelines to participate:
1. Create any vegetarian dish with 'toordal' being the main ingredient. Post about it on your blog before June 10th and send me an email. The last date to send entries is June 10th.
2. Toor dal in all forms is accepted. - Fresh or dried, split or whole.
3. Any course or cuisine is welcome and no eggs please.
4. If you have any special toordal dish in your archives that you like to showcase, send them over as well. Just remember to repost it with a link to this post and Kiran's main announcement page.
5. Non bloggers can email me the recipe. I would gladly include them in the final round up.
6. Multiple entries are allowed.
7. Linking to this page and Kiran's announcement page are mandatory. Usage of logo is also mandatory.
8. Send me an email at toveggieplatter@hotmail.com with 'toor dal' as the subject with the following details.

Announcing Jihva - Breakfast, March 2010

Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper ~ Adelle Davis

If we look back into our childhoods, probably we would find rare occasions when our busy mothers (or grandmothers) have left us starving in the morning. Never complaining women like my grandmother / mother in law with big families, had fed their kids at least leftovers if they could not prepare tiffin (desi term for breakfast.) They were wise enough to feed their kids in the mornings instead of telling them to wait for lunch.

Unfortunately, now we are in such a fast paced, time constrained and calorie conscious world that some of us choose to skip breakfast - the important meal of the day.
When we wake up in the morning, our body would be on starvation mode after an overnight fasting. Skipping breakfast would therefore be further starving and depriving our body the essential fuel.  Especially growing kids missing breakfasts regularly means jeopardizing health and less concentration and less learning at school.
Studies show that people who eat more calories in the morning tend to eat fewer during the day. Eating a well-balanced breakfast will help us feel more energetic all day. It kick-starts our metabolism, meaning we burn more calories more efficiently.
A cup of low fat milk / yogurt / milkshake / a fruit / PBJ sandwich / cereal bars / cereal / bagel with cheese are some of the simple, no cook choices to suffice the hunger of a kid or even an adult.

A breakfast with a balance of carbohydrates for energy, protein and fiber to help keep us full longer is good for our body and brains.
NO SKIPPING & NO BINGEING is the key.

Thanks to Indira, I am hosting Jihva here during March 2010 and I have chosen the theme as 'Breakfasts'.

Breakfast can be anything - Simple ones or elaborate ones, traditional ones or inspired ones, Eastern or Western, cooked or assembled or the ones concocted from your imagination and creativity.
Send me over anything you prepare, enjoy and would like to share.

Here are the guidelines for participation in JIHVA - Breakfast

1. Prepare any vegetarian / vegan breakfast and publish the recipe on your blog in the month of March 2010.  No eggs please.
2. Please link to this event announcement and Indira's main announcement page in your post.
3. Please send me an email notifying about your entry at toveggieplatter@hotmail.com with the subject JIHVA and the following details - Name, Recipe name, Recipe URL and a picture of the dish.
4. Non-bloggers can email me the recipe and a picture, if they have one.
5. The deadline for this event is March 31st, 2010 midnight.
6. Multiple entries are welcome. Recipes submitted to other events are welcome.
